Opening Day!

Reading this title you would think I meant baseball or softball. I love the term opening day. However this opening day was to my other favorite pass time, LAWN MOWING. I love to mow lawns preferably when it'a not March and not 37 degrees though.

Tonight Josh and I went over to mow my grandmas lawn. I'm a bit behind. The spring softball season makes keeping up a little tough, but I manage.

I first learned to mow my grandpa's now grandma's, lawn when I was about 9 years old. We lived with my grandparents at the time. My grandpa was the type of guy who believed kids should have 'chores' and they should 'earn their stay'. He was a hard working man. "Money didn't grow on trees." Heard that one a lot.

Now my grandpa planted most of his yard from sod. He treated it like an expensive sports car. We were never allowed to even WALK on the front lawn, not even in October when trick or treating. We had to use the road. In the mornings and most evening, Grandpa would be out in the yard watering the lawn with the hose by hand. He'd spray and spray for hours. I can still picture him waving to the walking neighbors. The lawn was his pride and joy. Everyone knew it.

When it was finally time to mow, my grandpa would check the lawn three to four times throughout the morning to make sure the dew was gone. It had to be the perfect time. It couldn't be to wet because then the grass would collect underneath and the blade would rust. As a child, I thought this was normal mowing protocol. Who knew?!

When the mower was finally taken out of the shed, the routine maintenance would occur. Everything from checking the oil to adjusting the height of the wheels was done. "You can't mow it too short or it will create brown spots and the grass will die." That would be awful. I still worry about killing the grass if I changed the height.

As I began to mow there was a certain way you had to cut each week. He taught me to over lap so you didn't leave any unmowed strips of grass. You always raked ALL the clippings and put them in the plastic barrel. Always. When I mowed, he watched. Talk about pressure. One time, I was about 10 and I missed a large strip of grass. After I was all done, he pointed it out to me and made me start the back lawn all over again. He said, "this will help you slow down and make sure you don't forget to over lap the tires." His yard would look perfect if it took him (or me) all day.

After mowing, a whole other process then occurred. The cleaning process!! The mower was to be wheeled over to the burning barrel and flipped on its side (so the oil didn't run into the gas...was that possible?) and then a special tool was used to scrape all the grass out from underneath. Finally, the mower got sprayed with the hose and left in the sun to air dry.

Sometime Grandpa would pay me for my work. Other times he said he let me live under his roof. So I never argued. He was a nice guy though. When we moved out and before I had my license, he would pick me up to go mow his lawn. He'd repeat the same rules and steps to me until I was... oh about 20! When we were done, we'd always stop at Wendy's for the single combos. Grandpa loved those burgers. He'd say it was the one fast food worth his money.

Tonight Josh helped me with opening day since the grass was so long. I always think of grandpa when I mow. I smiled tonight as I poured the gas. I may not go through the exact processes now, but I never miss a strip of grass. :) I'm sure he curses me when I don't flip the mower over after each mow. Sorry Grandpa.

I've always enjoyed mowing my grandparents lawn. It reminds me of my childhood. It's my thinking time. Today, I am thankful for opening day.

One L A S T Day

These were the words I posted today at 7am on Facebook. One last day of work for a while. Even though I haven't quite decided where to spend my spring break, just knowing I don't have to work is awesome. :) Today I am thankful for one last day!!

Random Cards

I came home to mail on the counter. People don't usually send you a letter unless its an invitation to attend something of theirs; wedding, shower, party etc. This of course involves you purchasing a gift or writing a check. Other mail is usually bills. Josh has a rule, we only get mail on Thursday's. Thus, today happens to be Thursday.

Today my card was in a red envelope. I knew the hand writing right away. I couldn't help but smile. Jenna! My best friend Jenna. Jenna and I had known each other for 15 years, since middle school ages. We played sports together and Jenna was the JV coach when I first got hired for the varsity softball job. We had so much fun coaching together. I always keep her in the loop during my seasons. Jenna was part of some really successful Western Softball. If I need advice or motivation, Jenna sends it.

We are both card people. I purchase and send cards frequently. But tonight's not only made me smile, but reminded me to send more cards. It just makes someone feel good.

After what feels like a forever long week, I came home to open this red envelope. The card is totally Jenna. Tonight I am thankful for the 'I don't want anything, thanks for being my friend', card. Love you Jenna!

A Reason to be Thankful

Today I got home to find the note below. Note, cards, gifts are my favorite things. Tonight this note reminded me of why I love coaching. It made me very thankful for wonderful girls I coach.

Season Opener

Today we started off the 2012 season with a win against Coldwater. We scored 11 runs in 4 innings. We played solid defense in game one too. As a coach, I was very impressed and happy with our opening game. Game two, we lost some fire. We didn't hit as well or stay as focused as game one. First games, we will get stronger. I am thankful that our team won their season opener tonight!

Gratitude

Gratitude. I don't have many words to describe why I feel this way today. Some days, you ask yourself "why did I do this or that when it doesn't seem to matter..." Today I felt the exact opposite. Gratitude was shown today in many ways for many different things and reasons. It was a good day. My reflection is the word gratitude today. Thank you Lord for the gratitude poured my way throughout the day. I am thankful.

Overnights

As I lay in bed, my eyelids feel like they weigh 10 pounds. I am beat! The two hours of sleep I got last night just isn't cutting it.

Last night the softball team arrived at my house about 630pm. We went to dinner and came back to my house for goals and team bonding time. Later in the evening, the group of girls shared some heartfelt stories with each other. It was very emotional and rewarding for me. I'm glad each of them feel like our team is trusting and understanding. I love each of the girls on my team. They are all great people. I'm excited to see what this season has in store for us. The over night was not too sleep successful, but was a great start to our season.

Tonight I am thankful for our team over night.
